Plain-English glossary

Know the lingo before you rent.

K-rail, C&D, roll-off, tonnage. The words you will hear on a job site or an event permit, explained the way dispatch would explain them on the phone.

Restrooms

ADA-compliant restroom

A portable restroom built to Americans with Disabilities Act standards: wheelchair access, ground-level entry and extra room inside. Required at most public events. See ADA units →

Disposal

C&D debris

Construction and demolition debris: the concrete, wood, drywall, metal and mixed material a job generates. Bring it to our San Jose drop-off site or fill a container and we haul it. What we accept →

Disposal

Clean vs. mixed load

A clean load is one material, like all concrete or all dirt, and it is the cheapest to process. A mixed load has to be sorted. Separating materials on site can lower your disposal cost.

Containers

Cubic yard

The unit container sizes are measured in. One cubic yard is roughly the volume of a washing machine. A 20-yard container holds about 20 of those, or about 8 pickup-truck loads.

Containers

Driveway protection

Boards or plywood placed under the container rails and the truck path so the weight does not crack or mark concrete and asphalt. Ask for it when you book.

Site & safety

Fence panels

Freestanding 6 by 12 foot chain-link sections on weighted bases, linked together to secure a site or control a crowd. Delivered, set and taken down by our crew. See fencing →

Billing

Flat rate

One number that covers delivery, the rental period, pickup and disposal up to the weight limit. Your quote is the price. No fuel surcharge added after the fact.

Billing

Fuel surcharge

An extra fee many national haulers add on top of the base rate when diesel goes up. Valley does not charge one.

Restrooms

Handwash station

A freestanding portable sink with fresh water, soap and towels. Paired with restrooms at events and job sites to meet health requirements. See sinks →

Restrooms

Holding tank

The sealed tank under a portable restroom that stores waste between services. Also rented on its own for restroom trailers and job-site setups. Capacity and use set how often it gets pumped.

Disposal

Inert material

Debris that does not break down: concrete, brick, rock and dirt. Heavy, so it fills a weight limit fast, and usually priced at its own rate at the scale.

Site & safety

K-rail

A portable concrete barrier, also called a Jersey barrier, used to separate traffic, protect a work zone or secure an event perimeter. Named for its K-shaped profile. We deliver and place them. See K-rail →

Restrooms

Luxury restroom trailer

A multi-stall towable unit with flushing restrooms, running-water sinks, lighting, heat and AC. The pick for weddings, corporate events and film sets. See trailers →

Restrooms

OSHA-compliant unit

A job-site restroom and handwash setup that meets federal workplace standards for worker facilities. A common industry guideline is about one unit per 10 workers on a 40-hour week.

Containers

Overage / overfill

Loading above the fill line or past the weight limit. It is unsafe to haul and adds cost. If you are close, a swap or the next size up is cheaper than an overage.

Site & safety

Permit (right-of-way)

If a container or restroom sits on a public street instead of private property, most Bay Area cities require a right-of-way or encroachment permit. We will tell you when you need one and which office to call.

Site & safety

Privacy screen

Mesh fabric zip-tied to fence panels to block the view of a site or event. Cuts wind load less than a solid wall, so panels stay put.

Billing

Rental period

How long you keep the container. Up to 7 days is standard and included in the flat rate. Need longer? Call before pickup day and we extend it.

Restrooms

Restroom servicing / pump-out

Scheduled cleaning that pumps the tank, restocks paper and sanitizer, and wipes the unit down. Frequency scales with headcount and how long the rental runs.

Containers

Roll-off container

An open-top steel container, often called a dumpster, from 8 to 40 yards. A special truck rolls it off onto your site and picks it up when it is full. The workhorse of construction and cleanout debris. Pick a size →

Containers

Roll-off placement

Where the container sits. Flat, firm ground, about 60 feet of straight approach for the truck and clear overhead space with no wires or branches. Doors facing the work saves your back.

Containers

Swap / swap-out

Hauling away a full container and dropping an empty one in the same spot so work never stops. Call before your pickup day to schedule it.

Billing

Tonnage

The weight of your load in tons. Every size has a weight limit built into the flat rate. Go over it and there is a per-ton charge, so tell us what you are tossing and we size it right.

Disposal

Transfer station

A licensed yard where debris is received, weighed and sorted before it moves on. Valley runs one at 1611 S 7th St in San Jose, so you can drop off a load with no appointment. Hours & directions →

Disposal

Weigh-in / weight ticket

Your truck is weighed on a certified scale coming in and going out. The difference is your load. It prints on a ticket you keep for your records, so there is no guesswork and no padded estimate.

Disposal

Yard waste

Branches, leaves, grass and brush. Keep it separate from construction debris and it processes as a clean load at a lower rate.

Site & safety

Water-filled barricade

A plastic wall barrier you fill with water on site. Lighter to place than K-rail and the pick for event lanes and short-term traffic control.
